About the Kitchen

The designated kitchen area was formed on a relatively blank canvas.
Being a former doctor’s office and then stationery supply headquarters, a functional kitchen had been far from needed.

When the House was purchased, extensive interior ‘gutting’ had already taken place. Walls had been moved, built, and removed.

We were in the fortunate position of being able to chose what we wanted, and where we wanted it.

The kitchen is based on a relatively simple design:

  • a fully cabineted wall
  • a partially cabineted wall, in the style of a wet-bar
  • a central island

From the kitchen, you can go upstairs to the mezannine or out of the dutch door to the east and out into the conservatory.

We love to cook, so cupboard space was an essential element …
However, coming from a history of small homes and even smaller kitchens, space is something we have always craved!

We designed the kitchen in such a way as to allow for easy flow of traffic.
The core space (located under the vaulted ceiling) provides easy triangular access to the stove, sink and fridge. Basic counter space surrounds the stove and sink, with overflow surface running down the ‘stem’ of the T-shaped island.

The full-wall cabinets have been designed to hide a double fridge, so the depth is a large 3 foot.
This depth has meant that we are able to have 1′ cupboards/shelves at the back of the countertop, and 2′ cupboards on top.

Most of our appliances are new, but we are proud of some of our collectible items:

Electric Toaster from Estate Stove Co.
Estate Electric Toaster No. 177  – Pat. Dates 1911 & 25

This is a wonderful old 4-slice toaster with a metal label on the front that reads:
“Estate Electric Toaster  No. 177  Volts 110  Amp 5.5   The Estate Stove Company  Hamilton, Ohio  Patents Pending”.

The toaster comprises four swinging baskets all the heating elements are original.
This is the toaster that is pictured on page 32 of Toasters and Accessories by Helen Greguire.
